Do Etsy Auto-Replies Count for Star Seller? What Etsy's Warning Actually Means

Etsy auto-replies count toward the Star Seller first-message metric. Here is what a warning about personalized follow-ups may mean for sellers.

If you use Etsy's automatic replies, you may have recently received a message from Etsy encouraging you to personally follow up with buyers after an auto-reply.

I received one.

And as an Etsy seller, I found the message concerning — mostly because it wasn't clear exactly what Etsy was measuring.

The message said Etsy had noticed that many of my recent buyer conversations hadn't received a personalized follow-up after an automatic reply. Etsy recommended responding personally within 24–48 hours whenever possible.

More importantly, the message said that if the pattern continued, my shop could be at risk of disruptions, including:

  • Losing access to auto-replies
  • Losing Star Seller status
  • Reduced search visibility
  • Losing eligibility for Etsy Purchase Protection

Those are potentially significant consequences.

So I contacted Etsy Support to find out exactly what sellers are expected to do.

The Problem With the Warning

My biggest question was simple:

What exactly counts as failing to respond?

I use Etsy's scheduled auto-replies outside of my normal working hours. That creates some situations that aren't addressed particularly well by the warning.

For example, suppose a customer messages Saturday afternoon.

They receive my scheduled auto-reply. I don't normally work weekends, so I personally respond Monday morning.

Is Etsy now expecting sellers to monitor their messages and personally respond during their scheduled days off?

There's another common scenario.

Suppose I've already helped a customer and they reply:

“Perfect. Thank you!”

If that message arrives outside my available hours, Etsy may send another scheduled auto-reply.

Do I now need to send another personalized message just because the automatic response fired?

Neither situation was clear from the warning I received.

What Etsy's Published Star Seller Rules Say

Etsy's published Star Seller guidance makes an important distinction.

The message-response metric used for Star Seller is based on the first message in a conversation.

For Star Seller, Etsy currently requires sellers to respond to 95% of first messages within 24 hours.

Etsy also states that temporary and weekly auto-replies count toward the Star Seller messaging score. Its messaging guidance says those auto-replies are sent in response to a shopper's first message.

That means an automatic reply can satisfy the response requirement for the first message in a conversation.

Etsy's guidance also supports using weekly auto-replies to communicate when you are available. So far, so good.

Star Seller Is Not the Only Etsy Message Standard

Etsy also publishes separate customer service standards. For messages, the published customer-service standard is to reply to 80% of first messages in a thread within 24–48 hours; Star Seller's target is 95% within 24 hours.

That matters because Etsy says not maintaining customer service standards can affect a shop's account status and search visibility.

Both published measures are still described in terms of first messages. Neither explains the personalized-follow-up pattern described in the warning I received.

I Asked Etsy Support for Clarification

I contacted Etsy Seller Support and specifically asked about the message I received.

The initial automated support response actually added to the confusion, so I requested a human agent.

Once connected, I provided the Etsy representative with the complete warning and asked for clarification about weekends, conversation-ending messages, and — most importantly — the metric Etsy would use to enforce the warning.

The representative confirmed that Etsy's normal message response metric is based on the first message in a conversation.

They also confirmed that an auto-reply counts as that initial response.

When I specifically asked about weekend messages, the representative told me:

“You shouldn't need to put your shop in Vacation Mode just because it's the weekend. Customers should still be able to shop and place orders on Saturday and Sunday. You respond to them on Monday when you return to work.”

The representative also confirmed that conversation-ending follow-ups such as “thank you” do not require another response for purposes of the normal message-response metric.

That matches Etsy's published documentation regarding how the Star Seller message response rate is calculated.

So Do Etsy Sellers Have to Personally Respond After Every Auto-Reply?

Based on Etsy's currently published Star Seller response metric: no.

The metric measures your response to the first message in a conversation, and Etsy says an auto-reply counts as that response.

But there's an important caveat.

The warning I received specifically said Etsy had noticed buyer conversations that “haven't received a personalized follow-up after your automatic reply.”

That suggests Etsy may be looking at something beyond the normal Star Seller response-rate calculation.

And that's where things become less clear.

The warning says that continued behavior could result in disruptions, but it doesn't explain what threshold triggers those consequences.

It doesn't tell sellers:

  • How many conversations require personalized follow-up
  • How quickly that follow-up must occur
  • Whether scheduled days off are excluded
  • Which types of buyer messages require follow-up
  • How conversation-ending messages are handled
  • What specific metric determines when a seller is considered noncompliant

The 24–48-hour period in the warning may overlap with Etsy's published customer-service standards, but the warning's emphasis on a personalized follow-up is not explained by the published first-message metrics.

That's an important distinction.

What I'm Doing in My Own Etsy Shop

For now, I'm not changing my normal business hours or treating weekends as working days simply because I operate an Etsy shop.

I'll continue using scheduled auto-replies when I'm unavailable.

If a customer contacts me over the weekend and their question requires an answer, I'll respond when I'm back at work.

If someone has an actual problem with an order — particularly a Help with Order request — I'll obviously treat that differently and respond appropriately.

And if a conversation has naturally ended with something like “Thanks!” or “Perfect!”, I'm not going to create an endless cycle of replies simply because an automatic response happened to fire.

Most importantly, I won't use auto-replies as a substitute for customer service.

There's a meaningful difference between using an auto-reply to establish reasonable business hours and using one to avoid responding to customers altogether.

What Etsy Sellers Should Take Away From This

If you received the same warning, I don't think there's a reason to panic.

Etsy's published Star Seller rules still say that the response metric applies to first messages and that auto-replies count toward that metric.

A human Etsy Support representative confirmed the same interpretation when I asked specifically about the warning.

However, I also wouldn't completely dismiss the message.

Etsy clearly wants sellers using auto-replies to eventually engage personally with buyers when a conversation actually requires a response. The warning also indicates that Etsy may be paying attention to sellers who routinely allow automatic replies to substitute for meaningful customer service.

What Etsy has not clearly explained is how that behavior is measured or exactly when it becomes grounds for the consequences listed in the warning.

Until Etsy publishes more specific guidance, the sensible approach seems straightforward:

Use auto-replies to establish reasonable availability, personally respond to buyers who actually need a response, and don't assume running an Etsy shop means you have to be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

That's how I'll be handling it in my own shop.
