Shipping rates go up. Etsy automatically adjusts what your customer pays. You're still covering your shipping costs, so your profit should stay the same, right? Not quite.
Etsy charges transaction and payment processing fees on shipping, too. So even when your customer pays the full cost of postage, higher shipping rates can quietly eat into your profits.
A $10 Product: Then vs. Now
Imagine selling a handmade item for $10. Shipping used to cost $4. Today, that same package costs $8.50 to ship.
Here's what happens using Etsy's standard U.S. seller fees:
| Before | Now | |
|---|---|---|
| Product price | $10.00 | $10.00 |
| Shipping charged | $4.00 | $8.50 |
| Customer pays | $14.00 | $18.50 |
| Actual shipping cost | -$4.00 | -$8.50 |
| Etsy transaction fee (6.5%) | -$0.91 | -$1.20 |
| Payment processing (3% + $0.25) | -$0.67 | -$0.81 |
| Listing fee | -$0.20 | -$0.20 |
| Remaining before production costs | $8.22 | $7.79 |
That's 5.2% less money left over on the exact same product, even though your customer covered every penny of the shipping increase.
Sell just 50 of these items, and that's $21.50 in additional fees, not because your product costs more to make, but simply because shipping rates went up.
And that's just one product in your shop.
Lower-priced products are especially vulnerable. An extra $0.43 in shipping-related fees might not seem significant, but on a $10 item, it can take a meaningful bite out of your earnings. And if your margins are already thin, that small increase can make an even bigger difference.
Why Does This Happen?
Etsy's standard transaction fee (6.5%) and U.S. payment processing percentage (3%) apply to shipping charges as well as product prices.
For every additional dollar charged for shipping, approximately 9.5 cents goes toward fees.
And offering free shipping doesn't eliminate the problem. Building postage into your product price still leaves it subject to those percentage-based fees.
Are You Pricing for Profit?
Shipping is just one of the expenses that quietly affect your bottom line. Materials, labor, packaging, equipment, and marketplace fees all determine what you actually earn.
Making a sale doesn't necessarily mean making money.
